    Ben’s 35th Birthday BBQ

Saturday evening, we went over to Ben and Dora’s new home to celebrate Ben’s 35th birthday. Despite getting ready to drop anchor, Dora prepared a ton of food, which was all delicious. Ben manned the grill, even with his gimpy foot (torn achilles tendon – ouch). We brought over our Poker set, which had never been used and had a good game of hold ’em after dinner. We started with 11 players, and I did not end up in the money. Allison ended up being the sneaky one, claiming she didn’t know what she was doing – “does my aces over queens full house beat your measly straight?” Good times – Happy Birthday, Ben!

    Michigan Wedding Reception

Grace and I returned to Michigan (on the same red-eye as last week – ouch) this past weekend. Grace’s parents hosted a dinner reception to celebrate our marriage for our parents friends who were not able to make it to California for the wedding. It was mostly Grace’s parents’ friends, but there were several of my parents’ friends who I have not seen in a long time. Jen and Dave also made the trip.

After a nice dinner, Grace and I changed into ham-boks to perform a pae-baek, which is a traditional Korean wedding ceremony. It generally involves a lot of bowing, to pay respect to each other’s family. In return, we received words of wisdom from our parents as well as generous gifts from them and aunts and uncles. Grace and I resisted doing this during our actual wedding weekend, mostly because of timing and logistics. However, we both had fun and I’m sure our parents were pleased. I think my mom mostly wanted pictures. Thanks to Auntie Park, who not only guided us through the ceremony, but also explained the significance of each exchange.

Late in the evening, Grace and I met up with Dave in Ann Arbor. We had just missed Art Fair, so there was still a lot of cleaning up going on, even past midnight. We ended up at Charlie’s because Grace was craving Count Twists. Being in Ann Arbor brought back many fond memories of college. I know it’s different for Grace because it’s her hometown. I always love being back there – hopefully we can make it back for a Michigan football game this fall.

    Lisa and Mark’s Wedding Weekend

Grace and I spent a long weekend in Philadelphia for Lisa and Mark’s wedding. After a brutal red-eye (connecting through Detroit, no less), we arrived in Philadelphia. In a moment of unusual frugality, Grace arranged for us to stay at her brother Dave’s place in the city – he and his roommate are away for the summer. For grad students, they are living very well in a beautiful apartment overlooking City Hall. Dave was very gracious, and even promised new sheets and laundry facilities. Despite that, I was mortified to find our accommodations lacking television and internet. I’m not sure what pushed Grace over the edge, but she was on the phone to the Four Seasons within 15 minutes and we bid farewell to Dave’s doorman, who had just searched high and low for the keys that were left for us. Somehow, Grace decided that the hotel was walkable, so we dragged our crap halfway across Philly (I don’t care if it’s a “small city” – I was melting). It was still early, so our room was unavailable. We found the closest Starbucks, where we both worked the rest of the morning.

In the afternoon, we settled into our lovely accommodations and rationalized the change of plans – the best thing was that all wedding activities were at the hotel. We met up with some friends and finally got to meet Lily Carlson (who, by the way, chillaxed with us all weekend long). Grace and I both had some conference calls in the early evening. Afterwards, we had a very nice dinner at Roy’s with Matt and Theresa. Back at the hotel, we met up with the whole crew at the hotel bar. After closing the bar at 1am, the smart ones negotiated with the Four Seasons staff to allow us to hang out “quietly” on the lower level. Ryan had arranged for 2 cases of beer on ice (then went to bed). Later, Greg ordered a third. Even in his state, the $170 bill perplexed him. Around 3am, when more beer was being spilled than drunken, Grace and I retired – others pressed on.

Saturday morning, our room was dark as a cave when I was surprised by a call from Greg who was ready to rally. 10 of us headed to Cuba Libre for a great lunch. Lamar and I opted for “steak and eggs,” but got a little more than we bargained for. In addition to the steak, our plate came with hash browns, Chorizo, and bacon. I gave up Chorizo after I saw something on the food network about how they make it, so I requested double bacon instead. Afterwards, I was ready to nap and watch golf. The girls went out to get pampered. Shortly before the wedding, I realized that in addition to forgetting the Gold Bond, I also forgot my tie. I found an exact replacement at Boyd’s (an excellent shopping experience – thanks, Peg).

The wedding was splendid in every way. I have a new appreciation for all the fine details after planning and experiencing our own. Lisa and Mark looked great, the food was incredible, and everyone had a great time. I’m sure the Four Seasons staff was happy when everyone went to bed. Sunday morning, we made it down to brunch in time to see the newlyweds and our friends before heading home. We enjoyed our remaining time in Philadelphia resting and watching golf, which is something we rarely get to do at home.

I won’t get into all the details of our painful trip home, not only because we made it safely (though our luggage did not), but because it was all worth it – a great weekend with great friends.

    Fourth of July, 2005

Grace and I had a fun, relaxing weekend together in the bay area. Friday night we had dinner with Dora and Ben at Left Bank. It was nice to catch up with them. Saturday we just hung out around home. We tried to go see Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but couldn’t get seats together, so opted to see War of the Worlds instead. Thumbs down from both of us – not just because Tom’s been a bit whacko lately, but also because we expect more from Spielberg. Sunday morning, we had an early tee time at Cinnabar Hills with Francis and John Park, who we haven’t seen in a while. John ended up winning 15 skins on a single hole with a clutch birdie – ouch. Monday, we did some projects around home and ran some errands. Grace’s manager, Ed, graciously invited us to his house for a barbeque. It was fun to hang out with his wife, baby son, and in-laws at their home, which has great views from high above San Mateo. Afterwards, we went up to the city for another barbeque at the Idemas’. It was our first time meeting baby Caitlin.

    Brownie’s Bachelor Party

I spent the weekend in Michigan with the boys for Mark Brown’s bachelor party. Jon was gracious enough to have us over to “Carlson’s Cabana” on beautiful Grand Traverse Bay. I met up with Matt S-H shortly after 5am at O’Hare on Friday morning. We were greeted with Northern Michigan hospitality when our cab driver offered us pot after 3 minutes in cab. A lot of the gang had been in town since Wednesday, so some damage was already done by the time we arrived. The good news was that Mark (aka Brownie and Mud) turned $20 into $1200 at the local casino. Friday was spent relaxing on the water and at the Cabana and engaging in sporting activities like whiffle-ball and the bag toss game Regan and Cohen brought from Chicago. All of this was preparation for the official Olympic games held in the evening, where four teams battled each other in indoor bags, pig hunt, bat-spin relay, and outdoor bags. I didn’t get the final standings from commissioner Lobdell, but I think my team won.

The evening ended very late and some of us had a 7:40am tee time. I wasn’t sure if people could rally, but I got up around 6:30am and everyone who was planning to play rose to the occasion. After scouring the house looking for the players, I found Whitey. He was the second person to leave “the games” after tripping over the garbage his dog, Buddy, got into on the porch. Someone found him passed out between the cars on the driveway. I found him a bloody mess in the morning, but he sprung up immediately. I called T’kindt when I didn’t find him. He was sleeping in his car. Ryan Arnold was down the road at his sister’s condo. Lamar and Charles were also ready and we made it to the course with time to spare. We played the new course at A-ga-ming, which was very nice. By the time we got back, the rest of the fellas were up and already at it. Some of the others were well into their own round of golf on the Playstation. I had a nice siesta on the hammock, which was much-needed.

It was more bags and whiffle balls until the early evening, when the party bus pulled in to take us into town. We made a stop at the Bay View Lounge to say hello to Whitey’s sister and have some drinks and pizza. Then it was off to the Holiday Inn, to party at the world famous Shimmer’s nightclub. Good times. From there, things got a bit disorganized as the group splintered. Half of us headed back to the cabana on the bus. The other half were banned from Shimmer’s shortly after and had a tougher time getting back. I think Carne and Cohen finally got back around 4am. The rest of the evening was a little painful for me. I fell asleep during the third viewing of Kill Bill Vol 2. and woke up around 3:30am, fetal on the couch, with no protection from the adult entertainment blaring in my ear, the fan creating a wind chill, and the mosquitoes attacking me. My sleeping bag was MIA. I had the fleeting thought that I may be getting a little old for this. However, there was talk of making this an annual event. If so, I’m in.

The trip home was not as easy as the trip there. Our flight out of TC was delayed. My theory was that the crew had a late night at Shimmer’s. In any case, we missed our connection in Chicago and spent 11 hours at O’Hare trying to get a flight back to SFO. S-H and I upgraded on the 6pm and convinced Posse to miss his confirmed 5:10pm flight to ride the back of our bus (a 747 no less). We weren’t wheels-up until 9:30pm because United couldn’t find their 747. Disaster.

    Quick stats:

    • Number of flights to get to TC: 3
    • Number of T-Shirt versions Regan made: 3
    • Number of T-Shirt versions suitable to wear around girlfriend/wife unit: 1
    • Amount of money swallowed by Brownie in the first round of pig hunt: $0.25
    • Amount of change dispensed: TBD
    • Number of bean bags tossed during Mudfest: 8372
    • Number of whiffle balls and frisbees retrieved by Rowan’s dog, Daisy: 948
    • Number of whiffle balls and frisbees Whitey’s dog, Buddy, was able to steal from Daisy: 0
    • Number of TC baby sitters who made some serious overtime on Saturday Night: 2

Andi, Greg & O’Brien in SF

Andi and Greg were back in San Francisco for a visit. O’Brien decided to fly in from NYC because trouble was promised. We’re glad he’s moving back in a couple of months. Friday, we met for drinks at Habana. Saturday, after Golfing with the Sugars, Grace and I went over to the Union Street Fair. It was madness. Not only did we realize we were old, but we were puzzled as to from where all these people came – good people watching in any case. Apparently, Greg and Andi got an early start and went MIA around 4pm. We saw Marty at “Left At,” where they had spent the entire day. Grace and I started to make our way to Final Final to watch the Pistons game with Matt and Theresa, but were diverted to Ben and Tam’s. It happened to be Ben’s birthday – Happy Birthday! We watched the Pistons destroy The Heat, then headed home – right about the time the rest of the crew was getting their second wind in North Beach. On Sunday, we met up with Rana, Nomaan, Andi, Greg, Theresa, Matt, Jen, Don, and Jackquie over at Marty’s, where we hung out on the roof. Afterwards, we went to California Wine Merchant for several hours, where Ben and Todd joined us and I met Oscar, the Bernese Mountain dog. We finished the evening at Naked Fish, where Simone joined us. Grace duped everyone into eating Shrimp heads and got lit up on Sake. It was a fun weekend.

    Dorkfest 2005

On Sunday, I attended the third annual gathering of Z3 coupes at Blackhawk Auto Museum in Danville. There were 58 coupes from all over the west coast (Oregon, Arizona, SoCal, etc.). Grace decided to join me at the last minute. We met several very nice people before getting on the road to meet up with the crew in the city. I don’t think I’ll be setting up the M Coupe for strictly track use any time soon, but it was cool to see what others have done. For now, it’s mostly stock except for one suspension modification by the previous owner and an audio system I’ve been working on for several months. More on this later. Okay, I’ll admit that the gathering is officially called “Dorkfest.”

    Golfing with the Sugars

On Saturday, Grace and I played golf with Lisa and Brian for the first time. Brian has been playing regularly and we’re excited that Lisa is starting as well. It was a beautiful day at the Presidio and thankfully we weren’t rushed. Both Lisa and Brian showed promise of greatness on the course. They left us around 14th hole to go to their first lesson. We caught up with them at the end of it and they were both much improved. Looking forward to many more rounds with them.

  • New Wedding Photos

    by

I received additional wedding photos from my mom and Dave, so I added them to the wedding albums and reorganized a bit. Several friends have shared their photos online:

    • Despite a near-catastrophic drop of the camera during the cocktail hour, Nick and Melanie captured a lot of great moments
    • Tamara was determined to take some great photos for us and she did – see them here
    • Brian was circling throughout the ceremony and took some really stunning photos
    • Bobby also took a ton of great photos: album 1, album 2, album 3

I haven’t had time to browse the ~1600 proofs that the wedding photographers took. Sorting through them is a bit daunting, but I’m looking forward to seeing them. See all of ours here.
