    Dad’s 70th Birthday

Yesterday was my Dad’s 70th birthday and we celebrated at Morton’s in Manhattan. This happy occasion brought together our extended family, many of whom I have not seen in over 20 years! Still, it was an intimate affair and we enjoyed catching up with everyone.

Our cousins, Steve, Thomas and Heidi, all joined us with their respective spouses, Mee Jung, Jane and Bobby. The last time I saw them I was likely in middle school. I was really happy to see them. Their father, unfortunately, was not feeling well, so he and his wife stayed home to watch Heidi’s two girls.

My uncle and aunt came in from Long Island, along with my cousin, Youngsun, her husband, Byung, and their very handsome son, Danny. Their family took me skiing to Vermont when I was younger. My Dad’s cousin from New Jersey also joined us. Finally, the team would not have been complete without all of Eemoh’s family. We were glad that Andrew and Halle were also with us to celebrate.

We had a memorable evening together. Dad encouraged all of us to get together more often. Thanks to Jen to planning such a wonderful dinner (Grace and I spread the rose petals).

    Christmas 2005

Grace and I flew out to NYC on a Friday night redeye. My dad picked us up at JFK in the morning. Linda and Danny were down in Florida with their family and were gracious enough to allow us to stay at their beautiful place on Central Park West (we’re still here!). We caught up on some sleep in the morning and headed over to Jen’s, where my parents are staying. We had lunch and went out to do some last minute shopping. Bobby met up with us briefly in Midtown. We went back to Jen’s for dinner. Cousins Lou and Millie were in the city and also came over. Jen and mom cooked a multi-course extravaganza, which included an incredible beef tenderloin. We had a great time catching up and reminiscing.

On Christmas day, we went back over to Jen’s to open presents with our families. Our second cousin, Jayoung, who is studying in NYC, also came over. Jen and mom did some cooking before we all headed over to Clarence’s house in Tenafly, NJ. It was our first time visiting their ginormous new home. Their townhome in Fort Lee would have been busting at the seams with all of the different clans that gathered for their Christmas feast. All of Eemoh’s family, Kwons (and cousins), Chois, Lees were there as well as their respective little ones.

The Doctors Kwon (always so generous) brought lobsters and crabs for all and the Lees brought over the Peking Duck. Mom made several appetizers, which were also a big hit. We were stuffed.

The first event of the evening was an arm wrestling rematch between Millie and Kenny, who is now unbelievably a senior at Georgetown. Kenny was surprisingly defeated by Millie a couple of years ago. 2005 was also not his year, though it seemed close. The pictures are priceless.

Instead of Secret Santa, we did a white elephant gift exchange, which proved to be quite hilarious. It took a while for some to realize the implications of the rules. Soon, the Rhees were accused of collusion. Though it seemed to make no sense when my father stole a gift from my mother, it all worked out when I stole it back from the Lees who stole it from him – it was locked in our family. Similarly, my sister scored the gift my mom wanted (which she actually brought) and in return, she scored the Kiehls gift box that Jen wanted. Others soon caught on, but it was too late. Proving that you can’t judge a gift by its cover, Lou’s gift, which was nicely wrapped in a Kroger’s grocery bag, turned out to be the last item picked and also the one “guy gift” (headphones) that we all would have chosen over our bath oils and ground coffee. A very memorable gift exchange indeed.

The fun did not end there. The cousins had planned a big Yut tournament, which is sort of like a Korean version of Sorry. Though we lost some key players due to the hour, we were still able to play amongst the clans. Jayoung played for us, which turned out great because she not only threw with style, but also had some clutch tosses. Grandmother Kwon also got in the action and proved to be a solid player. In close matches, the Rhees and Eemoh’s family advanced to the finals. We had a nail-biter of a match. It looked like they were a cinch to win with double players just a throw a way from finishing the game. But Jayoung reached down deep and threw some amazing Yut sticks that allowed us to catch two of their pieces, forcing them to start them over. We then also made it all the way around the board, and needed just one throw to win – anything but a back do (one backwards). Amazingly, that was exactly what dad threw. Drama. Luckily, mom came thru on the next throw and we won.

The big prize is neither money nor even bragging rights. Instead, all of the other team members had to do a big bow to the Rhees. It was quite rewarding.

    Dinner with Stanford Crew

Saturday, 12/10, we entertained at our place for the first time since we got married! Patrick and Alicia, Jason, Harmony, and the kids, and Sunny all came over for dinner. Grace cooked up a storm and it was great to catch up with everyone. Logan and Cadence are unbelievably adorable. Though they tried, Snickers was not interested in playing with them – I think he viewed them more as animals than little people.

    Grace’s McKinsey Holiday Party

Grace got back from Austria on Friday 12/9 in the evening. She was determined to make it to her holiday party, so we went home to change and were soon on our way to Menlo Park Country Club. We missed dinner, but were able to say hello to some of her team before parents were on their way home to their children. We ended up closing down the party. On the way home, we decided we needed late night In and Out and convinced Jay and Aetna to join us while bombing up I-280. Good times …

    Grace in Kitzbuhel for Work

I thought this might be the occasion for Grace’s first post. We’ve both been a bit swamped during the year-end and thus we both have not been as good about posting. In any case, Grace went to Kitzbuhel, Austria, right after Thanksgiving for a couple of weeks for work. Though she was a bit under the weather for the better part of the trip, it sounded like she had an incredible time and made many new friends. Highlights included a side-trip to Munich and a night-time sledding run down the mountain (after a grueling hike UP the mountain).

    Thanksgiving 2005

Grace and I spent Thanksgiving with her parents and the rest of the Parks down in Los Angeles. We flew down on Thanksgiving day, which made travel much less hectic for us. After stopping at their home in Westwood, we went to visit Grace’s grandfather’s gravesite, which was the first time for me because I unfortunately missed his funeral in February. He is missed.

Afterwards, we went to pick up her grandmother and headed to Uncle Jong Hee, Aunt Kathy, Christina, and Eugene’s home in the Hollywood Hills. It was my first time visiting their house, which has beautiful views from high up above Los Angeles. Christina and cousin Tommy’s wife, Gina, did most of the cooking. Tommy made soup. Uncle Jong Hyun and his family, including Andy, Anna, and the grandchildren were also there. All of the food was delicious and several cousins, including Grace, passed out from food coma. Later that evening, Grace and I met up with Ann and Jeremy for drinks at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica. It was great to see them and catch up, though we were sad to miss seeing little Murphy, for whom we dog sat last Christmas. He’s 50 lbs. now.

Friday, we all went out to breakfast at Jerry’s in Westwood. Afterwards, Grace and her mom had a shopping mission and I was along for the ride. For the most part, I occupied myself by doing laps at Barney’s, SFA, and NM, mostly people watching and occasionally car watching. I spotted a Mercedes SLR at Barney’s that made the Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s tooling around seem pedestrian. It soon became my mission to find the most comfortable chair possible at each location – I had a quick nap at NM (or was it a long one). Now, I can fully empathize with my father, though he had no Blackberry on which to surf eBay.

We had to drop Grace’s mom off at the salon later in the afternoon and then it was just us. I made the mistake of driving back towards civilization on Melrose – more chairs, magazines, and people watching for me. It wasn’t until I was in BCBG, when a very kind woman acknowledged my anguish as I perused Vogue and offered me a Diet Coke. We finally got into the car and as we passed by Diane von Furstenberg, Grace asked if we could turn around. It was at that moment that I confided to Grace that I was in hell. No matter, I was commended for my patience and we were soon rounding the corner. It was on this stop that Grace finished her list: new bag, boots, pants, and top. I got a free diet beverage. All was right in the world.

We met Grace’s parents for dinner at Chosun Galbi before returning home Friday evening. It was a quick trip, but we got to see everyone for the holiday, which was nice.

Grace left for Austria this evening, so it’s just me and Snickers for two weeks. Here he is keeping me company as I write this.

    Ryan Hayashi & Amanda Huang

Warren called earlier today while he and Julia were out on Burlingame Avenue with Ryan. When I went out to meet them, he was taking a little nap, but eventually woke up. Later, Jon and I went over to Ben and Dora’s house to meet Amanda. She was born on October 4th, but I haven’t had a chance to meet her until today. Both of them are very happy and beautiful babies.

    OSU vs. U of M

Marty invited everyone over to watch the real “Big Game” over at his place.

    The bright side:

    • Bacon was served.
    • It was a spectacular November day in San Francisco.
    • After 12 years and 10 roommates in the same apartment, Marty finally got new paint and carpet.
    • Jen took Dad to see the game and he enjoyed it, despite the outcome.
    • Did I mention bacon was served?

    Contributing to my Tourettes:

    • We lost.
    • OSU did not fumble enough.

    Until next year…

    Andrew’s Going Away Dinner

Our friend, Dr. Andrew Peden, is returning home to Scotland at the end of the year. Andrew was a post-doc in the Scheller lab at Standford while Grace was there. He finished his post-doc at Genentech and landed a great position at his old school, Cambridge. While we’re sad to see him leave the Bay Area after so many years, we’re excited for him and we know he is too. He’s off traveling the globe with Philip; the two of them will be kite surfing in some killer places for the next six weeks or so. On Friday, we had dinner with Boris (the German member of the “European Duo”), Philip, and Grace’s friends, Theresa and Ulrick. Afterwards, we headed over to Bliss, where many other friends joined us for his going away party.

    Rhonda and Ky’s Housewarming

Rhonda and Ky recently bought a great place in the Mission. They’ve been working hard on getting it cleaned up and painted and making it their own. Grace and I went over to their place on Saturday night and caught up with the gang. We were bummed to miss the Hayashis and the Gellerts and their little ones. The place looks fantastic. After having lived with Ky, I can attest to the fact that the man has more crap than you can shake a stick at. Rhonda must have forced him to purge some things (though the battle couch is still there, just in disguise) because she needed room for all of her interesting knick-knacks. I like the rule about having only one animal skull per room, though there seemed no limit on the number of insects. It became clear who among us were the herpetologists when the flavored meal worms were brought out as snacks.
