    Cameron’s First Birthday Weekend

The weekend of September 17, we traveled to Kansas City to visit Addy, Charles, Delaney, and Cameron for his first birthday. All the grandparents and Dave also came for the occasion. We enjoyed a relaxing weekend with the family and even opted out of playing golf. Some other neighbors and friends came over for Cameron’s party, which was officially his “dohl,” which is a traditional 1 year birthday ceremony. During it, the baby is presented with a variety of items: book; pen; bible; cash. Whatever the baby chooses is meant to signify whether he or she will scholarly, rich, etc. Though Charles was probably rooting for the cash, Cameron picked that last. He ate the pen.

  • Dinner with Kara in the Mission

    by

After golf, Grace and I had dinner plans with Kara, a friend of Grace’s from work. Rather than go all the way home, we brought our gear and cleaned up in the lovely locker rooms at Stonetree (though the Sugars were also kind enough to invite us to their home). We were ready in no time and headed back to San Francisco. After some deliberation on the type of cuisine and restaurant, we settled on one of our favorites, Luna Park, in the Mission. It was nice to catch up with Kara, who I had only met once at their holiday party last year. We had all enjoyed our meals – big thumbs up on the Mac and Cheese, though Grace astutely pointed out that shells do not count as macaroni.

    Meeting Benjamin Lewis

Sunday evening, had more baby time when we finally met up with Liz and Jeff, who we haven’t seen since before the wedding. Even more exciting was finally meeting their new son, Benjamin, who is 110th percentile for a 3 1/2 month-old. Thanks to Liz and Jeff for dinner at Left Bank in Menlo Park, which they were also able to enjoy between each of them doing several laps with Benjamin – he was a trouper.

  • Patrick’s Graduation BBQ

    by

Friday evening, we went down to Palo Alto to celebrate Patrick’s thesis defense at a BBQ hosted by Alicia. Patrick was one of Grace’s Stanford housemates and Snickers’ best friend at the time (actually, it is well known that Snickers was not nice to Patrick for no good reason other than he’s insane – Snickers, not Patrick). The usual suspects were in attendance, minus Angry Jones (the other housemate) and his family. Mistake #1 – I forgot my camera.

  • Dora and Ben’s Baby Shower

    by

Sunday morning, we drove over the Bay Bridge for Ben and Dora’s baby shower, which was hosted by their good friends Ellen and Manny at their beautiful new home in Oakland. There were many of their family and friends in attendance. It was nice to catch up with several of our Kellogg friends we haven’t seen in a while, as well as friends of the Huangs who we’ve met at various events. I was especially delighted to meet Ryan Hayashi, who is Warren (my old roommate) and Julia’s new son. Grace had met him once before. Although I forgot my camera again (bad habit recently), Ben sent me some incriminating photos. The good news is Grace and I cleaned up on the games, as I beat the field in the baby bottle race and we both picked up prizes in baby gift bingo. Good times.

    Golf with Guiseppe

Things have been a little busy for us lately, so I haven’t been able to post in a long while. Even so, we’ve had some good times. About a month ago, Grace and I played golf at Half Moon Bay with her friend from work, Jay, and a friend we met through Ky, Guiseppe, who is visiting the US from Italy for a while. When Grace booked the tee time, I checked the weather and the high was supposed to be only in the upper 50’s, but it turned out to be a gorgeous day. We played the Old Course and it was wonderful – excellent conditions and beautiful scenery, especially the finishing holes, where 18 runs along ocean cliffs leading up to the beautiful Ritz Carlton. Great experience and well worth the wait.

    Golfing with the Sugars

Saturday morning, Grace and I headed over the Golden Gate bridge to golf with both Brian and Lisa at Stonetree, which is in Novato off 37 on the way to Napa. I’ve admired the course from the highway many times and we’ve been hoping to play there for several years (the course is just over 5 years old). Though the price is steep, the course did not disappoint. It is as beautiful as it is difficult. We had a great time and the Sugars are improving, despite unsolicited direction from us.
