  • Welcome Maeve TenBroeck Taras

    by

On Wednesday, July 19, our dear friends, Kim and Jeffrey, welcomed their beautiful daughter, Maeve TenBroeck Taras. She was born at 11:55am and according to Jeffrey, “tipped the scales at six pounds, fifteen ounces, and measured 19.5 inches.” We can’t wait to meet her! See more pictures here.

    Tyler Idema’s 4th Birthday

On Sunday, July 23th, Jen and Matt invited Grace, me, and the rest of the crew over to their home for big Tyler’s 4th birthday party. Matt prepped all of the guys without kids:

    Fellas,

We’re looking forward to seeing you in 650 this Sunday. Not sure how many 4-year-old birthday parties you’ve been to so here’s the drill:

Ty has a bunch of friends coming (age 4) from school, playgroups, etc. Most of that crew will show up right at 11:30. There will be a big jumpy thing in the yard and all the kids will play in it for the first half hour or so and then we’ll feed them (and their parents) hot dogs, burgers, brats, etc. out on the deck. After that will be cake and after the cake most of the kids will start to bail (no present opening). These things typically last 90-120 minutes, it’s very standard stuff.

The funny thing was, it went down just like that. Tyler and the rest of the kids had a great time. Theresa and Matt got him a Roboraptor, which is one of the coolest toys I’ve ever seen. Snickers will be getting a new friend soon…

What wasn’t advertised was what happened after all of the kids and their families went home. Idema, Dukes, and I pitted Jen, Theresa, and Grace against each other in the ultimate cage match – Burlingame style. Tyler got to ref because it was his birthday. Thanks to Idema for the footage.

    Happy Birthday, Ty.

    Golf with Jay Chiang

On Friday, July 21th, Alicia and Patrick invited us to their place in Palo Alto for dinner. They really went all out: gazpacho, kebabs, veggies, and a cobbler dessert – very impressive and tasty. Special thanks to Patrick, who manned the grill in the heat. On Saturday, the Bay Area experienced record temperatures. That didn’t stop us from some late afternoon golf at Stonetree with Jay. As we drove across the bridge towards Novato, the temperature creeped up to 113 degrees – damn. I’ve never felt that hot in the Bay Area before. It was a scorcher, but fun nonetheless.

    Grace’s McRyder Cup

On Friday, July 21st, Grace had to endure a tough day of golf at Harding Park instead of work. Actually, as organizer of the annual match play golf tournament between the Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices, and as captain of her team, it wasn’t a stress free day. The good news was that it was a beautiful day for golf in the city (unlike our last foggy outing there) and her team took home the McRyder Cup, which is now proudly displayed at home. Nice work, Grace!

    Man’s Meal

On Sunday, July 16th, the usual suspects convened for Man’s Meal at our usual Harris’ Steakhouse boardroom. We had an exceptional showing, with 12 guys in attendance. Ryan, Don, Marty, Nomaan, Caskie, Blaine, Posse, Dukes, Grady, and myself made up the SF crew. Goose was a visiting attendee and Nat, a friend of Greg Lobdell’s from grad school, was a welcome addition to the team. I opted for my usual Executive Cut prime rib, which ended up being the largest slab of beef people can recall being served. I killed it (figuratively). There was added drama to our bet, as I made an error in my entry by submitting the per person total, instead of the entire total for the group. Marty claimed he had too much wine to do the math, and therefore discarded my submission. Dukes was declared the winner, but upon calculation by Don, I was 9 cents closer. He offered to split the pot after a ruling, but I conceded that my entry was void. Major error..

    Golf with Steve & Ryan

On Saturday, July 15th, Grace and I played golf with Goose, who was in SF for vacation before he moves from NYC to London. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Steve, so it was great to spend the day with him on the golf course. Ryan also joined us for golf at San Geronimo. It turned out to be a warm, but beautiful day. Thankfully, the grill was fired up, and we all enjoyed something hot off of it at the turn (note that the chicken sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever tasted). Awesome day!

    Golf with Ryan & Francis

On Sunday, Ryan and Francis joined us for golf at our new home course, San Geronimo – too bad it is over 40 miles away. But, we always enjoy the drive across the Golden Gate Bridge. We had an early time and actually played pretty quickly. We stopped at Sam’s in Tiburon for some drinks and lunch. It was beautiful weather there, espcially compared to the city, which was covered in fog. It was over 90 at the golf course and about mid-70’s by the water. However, as we drove towards the bay, I watched the degrees tick lower and lower until it was in the mid-50’s on the bridge. It was plenty warm again by the time we got home to the Peninsula. Fun Sunday.

Jen flew into SF in the evening. Her flight was delayed, so we ended up having a late dinner across the street.

  • Dinner with Peden & Friends

    Dinner with Peden & Friends

We had to leave the BBQ early to meet up with Andrew Peden, who was visiting from the UK. Boris organized dinner in the Mission at Medjool. The food was great and we ate plenty, despite having eaten already at the BBQ. We lasted for 1 drink on the roof-top deck, which was packed. It couldn’t have been a nicer night in the city and it looked beautiful from up there.

    BBQ at Tam & Ben’s

Saturday, July 8th, Tam and Ben hosted a BBQ at their house in the Marina for the gang. It has been a while since we’ve all been together. Morgan is growing up fast! It was our first time seeing Matt and Theresa since their engagement – congratulations!!! Amy and Grady made it up as well with Sydney and Evan. Matt and Jen brought Tyler and Kate. Marty, Simone, Ryan, O’brien and his new girlfriend, and others made up the rest of the crew. We should get together more often…

    Golf with Jay Chiang

Grace and I both had to work on Monday (boo). However, on the 4th, we treated ourselves to golf at Stanford with Jay Chiang. I feel like it’s been over a year since we’ve played there. It was a reminder of how lucky we were to play there for $20 each when Grace was in school (it’s about 5x that now). It was a beautiful day and the course was in great condition. We had lunch together in Palo Alto to celebrate Jay’s birthday (5th).
