I'm a little behind - sorry.
Olivia was invited to her first big girl birthday party. Olivia's friend, Cate, from Gazelle, invited her to her birthday party at her parents' lovely home. Although the kids seemed obsessed with the Tooth Fairy, this fairy told stories, did magic and played with the kids. Olivia's friend from school, Timothy, was also there. She had fun playing with him on the jungle gym and in the jumpy. The fairy also painted all the kids' faces. I wasn't sure if Olivia would be into it, but she said she wanted to do it and was really excited about it. She was especially excited to show Grace when we got home.
Cate was like Olivia's big sister at school, but now's she's graduated. We hope we can see her often.
Happy Birthday, Cate!
It's always hard to believe when it's "that time of year" again, because it always seems it was just yesterday. On Sunday, August 8th, we met the Moons out on the Ave. for the Burlingame Art Fair. This year, there were more balloons gathered and lost. Olivia was also old enough for some rides. We ran into the Trammels with their crew. The twins are getting big.
Thankfully, it wasn't too hot - beautiful all weekend (we were out there on Saturday, too).
Lucas' lovey was nowhere to be found tonight. Olivia said she lost it at the swings. I wasn't sure if the intel of a 3 1/2 year-old could be trusted, so we continued to look. Grace pinged the person who watched them today, but before we heard back, I had to go looking for it. At 10pm, armed with a flashlight, I drove over to Washington Park. I checked everywhere and peeked inside all the trash cans, but eventually gave up.
On the way home, I got a text from Grace that the lovey was indeed taken to the park, but its return could not be confirmed. I then felt compelled to go look again, and this time I actually went poking through all the garbage cans with a stick.
Lucas actually has two loveys - one green and one yellow. They are non-descript little rag dolls with no brand or other markings. We have no idea where they came from. Grace has searched high and low for replacements, wanting to avoid Olivia's kitty debacle. My mother went so far as to knit him two replacements, and urged us to attach them to his real loveys. Unfortunately, Lucas would not give the impostors a second look.
To be honest, the yellow one has always been #2, which is why I didn't go diving into the bottom of all the garbage cans with my hands (I can confirm that there was a lot of yogurt and diapers in every one). I also refrained from posting something on craigslist, when I saw that most of the lost items were dogs, cats and 14K gold keepsakes. Some of you may know that the lovey is worth more than its weight in gold. This is a dark day.
We still have hope that it will turn up.

On Saturday, July 10th, Leslie and Jai invited us over for a pork feast. This was our first time visiting their home and meeting baby Sidney. It was great to see the rest of the Burlingame crew, too. The food was amazing - thanks!
On Thursday morning, Gazelle went on their annual field trip to the Burlingame Fire Station, which has merged with the Hillsborough to be come the Central County Fire Station. We carpooled with Clara and Alex from the school to the station. Firemen Gus, Pat and Paul led us on our tour for the day.
Some things we learned and saw:
I may have had the most fun on the field trip. Can't wait to do it again next year!
Grace and I could not believe the Burlingame Criterium was this weekend because it seems like it was just a few months ago. This past year really has flown by. We were excited nonetheless to take the kids downtown to check it out. We had the best seats on Burlingame Avenue on the sidewalk at Crepevine. Several years ago we were sitting in the same spot and I saw a pretty bad wreck. Thankfully we witnessed no spills today. It was an unbelievably gorgeous day out for the event. Next year we're going to make sure Olivia gets on the course for the kids event, which the announcer described as the largest anywhere in the country.
The kids were really not into the race and decided the park was more their speed. We ran into our old friend Meg and her family at the park and also had a chance to meet her husband, Stu. Although we knew they had lived nearby for several years, we never ran into them before. Several months ago, Grace and I took Lucas for a checkup while Kate took Olivia to a playdate at a friend's house. They had been going over there for a year but we never met them. We were dropping Lucas off at the playdate before heading to work. Kate called us to tell us Olivia had a pretty severe nosebleed, so I went inside to check her out while Grace was calling the doctor. When I got to the door, I expected to see Kate or their friends' nanny, but instead was greeted by ... Meg! What a small world. All this time they had been playing together but we never made the connection. We hope to see them again, soon.
Grace was "hosting" playgroup at Washington Park for the BMC crew, which turned out to be more of a play-date with the Moons - twice in one weekend (happy 9th anniversary on Saturday, btw). We had bagels and refreshments at the park. There was also an "Art in the Park" going on, but we didn't check it out. We ended up on "the Ave." Lucas got us kicked out of the Apple Store with his shenanigans. Olivia enjoyed a frozen yogurt treat at tuttimelon before heading home.
On Friday, June 11th, we resumed our Friday night dinner/playdates at Clara and Mike's house. The kids had fun playing and sharing. Abbu has been sequestered during most of our recent visits. Thankfully, he was out and about, because Lucas loves him. Olivia, not so much. Mike arrived home just as we were leaving.
Graduation day at Gazelle was on Wednesday, June 9th. Olivia didn't have school that day and didn't attend the ceremony, but everyone was invited to a picnic in Pershing park afterwards. Teacher Katie was there. It was also nice to see the Idemas (Kate was a graduate!). Olivia still has a couple years to go.
On Saturday, May 15th, we went over to Kim and Jim's house for BMC playgroup. Their new home is beautiful, with plenty of space for Joss and the twins and a killer back yard. Afterwards, we all went over to Franklin Elementary for their annual Carnival, where we met up with many others in the BMC playgroup. We went last year and everyone remembers it being scorching hot. This year, the weather was perfect. Olivia warmed up to the idea of going on the rides and after two consecutive spinny rides, I was done. We had some lunch and then left because Lucas kept trying to chase after the choo choo (only one ride for him). We're going to have to take him to LegoLand soon.
I was bummed to learn at the reunion that Rahul was in the US but not making it to Chicago. Therefore, I was glad to hear from him that the entire family was in the Bay Area for a visit before heading back to India. We met up for breakfast on Thursday, May 13th. The kids are both adorable. We felt so lucky to catch up with them on their trip.
What started out as trying to take a picture a day of Olivia for a year turned into 74 weeks. When Lucas arrived, I had to try for him, too. These pictures are from his 74th week - now I will switch to monthly. Don't tell them we missed a few days here and there...

Both Mike and Grace were away on business and arriving late on Friday. Clara was nice enough to invite us over for dinner on Friday, which is our usual Friday ritual. Even though we were outmanned 2-to-1, everyone survived. Olivia is still learning the art of sharing, especially things that don't even belong to her. Clara was, as always, the gracious host, right down to the ice cream dessert. Thanks for having us over!

Grace planned a pseudo-surprise 40th birthday party for me on Saturday, April 3rd. She knew that I wouldn't want her to make a big deal about it, so I was in the dark pretty much up until the event.
We had an early dinner with the family at Il Fornaio. Lucas likes to eat and run (mostly run), so I chased him around for most of dinner. Mom and Dad Park had to catch a flight back to LA and left right after dinner. Addy, Charles and the kids also headed back to the East Bay after spending the day with us.
I didn't know anything about the party until someone alluded to it my Facebook page on my birthday. Eventually, Grace mentioned that something was happening, but I had no idea who was coming. I was really happy and honored that so many friends turned out that evening. There were friends from childhood, college, work, parenthood, the neighborhood, and McK-hood.
The kids lasted for a bit and then my parents walked them home. It was great catching up with everyone, some of whom I hadn't seen in quite a long time. Grace got me an awesome cake and the service was friendly as always.
40 years has gone by quickly. Though in some ways, I'm just getting started. In any case, I always feel blessed by a loving and generous family as well as loyal friends who are near and dear, old and far. Most importantly, I'm the luckiest guy in the world to have such an amazing and thoughtful wife and two incredible kids who inspire me every day.
Thanks to everyone for coming and thinking of me and especially to Grace for bringing us all together.
David and Mom and Dad Park flew up from LA for the day and Addy & Charles came over from the East Bay to celebrate birthdays. Everyone went in and got me a Canon 5D Mk II, which is a significant upgrade to my Canon 30D. I've had the 30D since Olivia was born and it has served me well. The main difference is that the camera is full-frame. I'm sure I'll play with the 1080p video, too.
I already blogged about Grace's iPad, which was a total surprise. Nice work Charles and family! It's still in the plastic - looking forward to seeing if this will change our lives...
Addy and Charles also got the kids easter presents, which was super generous and unexpected. Lucas received a guitar and Olivia received an Elmo laptop. Delaney got a pretty cool slider phone (her first, I believe) and Cameron is one step further to completing his LEGO Starwars collection.
Thanks everyone. The later photos in the album was taken with the new hardware. It should be noted that not only did Charles procure the camera and accessories, but he also charged the batteries for immediate use. Finally, as only Charles would know to do, he also scored me a super-fast UDMA FW800 card reader. Awesome!
Hanging at home before heading out to Tomokazu. Lucas is always on the run...
