    Boston for Work

The rest of the week I spent in Boston. Charles was there coincidentally, so we had dinner together on Wednesday before I headed out to the burbs. The next night, my co-worker, John, and I came back into the city for a nice dinner. Finally, on Friday, before my flight home, I finally had a chance to look around Boston, as it had been over 16 years since my last real visit. I walked around Harvard Yard and went to see the dorm at which I stayed during summer school, which was almost 20 years ago! I have many fond memories from that time as well as a couple of my dearest friends, including Kerith and Edwin.

    NYC for Work

On September 12th, I traveled to NY for work again. It wasn’t on the ground long enough to see anyone, unfortunately. It was Fashion Week in NYC, so I had a tough time getting a room on late notice. I left it up to our travel (big mistake) to take care of this for me and I ended up in this 7×9 smoking room with a twin bed and no closet on South Park. Thankfully, I only spent a few hours there as I had a late night and an early morning.

    Travel to NYC for Work

Grace did an amazing job of unpacking the kitchen and some other areas on Sunday. But before we were hardly settled in, I was off to NYC the week of August 28th for work. On Monday, I headed straight into the city to meet Jon, Tina, Jen, Millie and Bobby for dinner. It was nice of them to meet me out so late, which by NY standards is probably just dinner time (at home, I may have been in bed by then). On Tuesday, a colleague and I took the train out to Warren, NJ. That evening, I met Jen, her friend, Stacy, Jeanah, and Chae, who had just moved to NYC, for dinner at one of Jen’s favorite local spots. It was nice to finally meet Stacy and it was great to catch up with Jeanah and Chae.

Jen had bought 12 tickets for the Tigers vs. Yankees game on Wednesday. It was just a coincidence that I was in town, but I was very happy to go. She even scored some extras so Bobby could attend. All of the cousins were there, including Lou, who also just moved to NYC, Millie, and even Clarence, who made a special appearance. It was too bad Liz also could not make it. Jen had another group of friends join us, including Carrie, who was also one of Grace’s friends from college, and Jon Arney, who sold me the behemoth TV in the moving picture below – I still love it, but you can barely give those things away now.

The Tuesday game was rained out, so it ended up being a double-header. Detroit lost the first one and after going up early in the second, fell behind later in the game. We had a good group of Detroit fans nearby, but we were still surrounded by Yankee fans, who seemed overly sensitive to the fact that someone could actually be rooting for the away team. At the top of the 9th, Detroit was down 4-2. With 2 outs, they hit a 3-run homer to take the lead. We went CRAZY – Yankee stadium became quiet. Bobby had already left “to beat the traffic” – so lame. It was a tremendous sports moment. We ended up winning the game. On the subway, we met up with many other Detroit fans as we coincidentally boarded the “D” train, while everyone chanted “D train.” It was good that we were traveling in numbers. We changed trains at some point and I hadn’t noticed that Jen was chatting up some guy. As I got off, she introduced me to this guy who apparently went to West Bloomfield High School (much younger) – small world.

The cousins, Jen and I all went out for a drink on the upper west side. Carrie and Jon Arney also caught up to us. It was late, so we all headed home in our separate directions. Instead of just getting into a cab, I started walking with Lou. We ended up walking all the way to the Apple store on 5th Avenue. It was past 1am by this point, but we strolled right into the beautful glass cube, as it’s open 24/7/365 – so cool. Sometime before 2am, we were on our way home for real. It was a very fun evening. Thanks to Jen for organizing and treating everyone with the tickets.

On Thursday, I trained up to Schenectady to visit another customer. I flew out of Albany to go home (via Dulles). It was really a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of day. Grace took that week off to unpack and nest. She did a very good job! I was very happy to get home to Grace, Snickers, and babyrhee.

    Moving Day

On Saturday, August 26th, Grace and I moved to a new place. After looking around a bit and even considering a move back to the city, we decided that we love Burlingame. Because we wanted to remain walking distance to downtown, we ended up finding a place just 3 blocks away on the other side of Burlingame Avenue. However, the distance traveled was not a measure of the effort – what a colossal pain in the ass! After a couple of weeks of packing (mostly Grace), moving day arrived. I’d say we were about 90% packed by the time the movers showed up, but it’s always that last 10% that kills you. It’s a good thing we did most of the packing, because they only sent three guys. I don’t know how we amassed so much crap into our two bedroom apartment, but even after discarding about 10% and giving away about 10%, all of our stuff did not quite fit on their huge truck – it was close though, as they were able to strap the overflow to the back of the truck with the liftgate raised.

I’ve blocked most of it out by now, but the most memorable part was watching them fail at getting our monster couch out the front door. I didn’t want to tell them how to do their job, so I stayed out of it, but if me and Warren were able to get it in, the three of them should have been able to get it out. Their solution was to send it over our balcony (2 stories up!). I was certain one or more of them would be maimed or killed in the process, especially when the guy in charge was barking instructions at the other guy who had apparently never attempted this, but who also had one end of a large strap tied around him as the other end was tied around the monster sofa-sleeper while it teetered over the edge of the railing. I could hardly watch. In the end, only the landscaping harmed (for which we were promptly billed by our diligent HOA).

We’re so glad we moved, but at the same time, we never want to move again.

    Ky’s Birthday Dinner

On Thursday, August 3rd, the usual suspects (those with babies with early bedtimes excepted) met for dinner at PPQ Dungeness Crab in the Richmond to celebrate Ky’s birthday. Afterwards, we headed over to Rhonda and Ky’s for a little friendly poker. Wait, this sounds like deja vu all over again… I don’t remember who was in the money – I just know it wasn’t me. Happy Birthday, Ky!

    Anna & Chris Visit

On Sunday, July 30th, we had dinner Anna, Chris, Liz and Steve at Osha Thai in the city. Anna and Chris were visiting from Michigan and had been vacationing in the Bay Area for the week. Charles and David also joined us. It’s always nice when the Ann Arbor Pioneer girls get together.

    Golf with Jeremy & Charles

On Sunday, July 30th, we finally got Jeremy out on the golf course. It was the first time we’ve golfed together since Ann and Jeremy moved to the Bay Area. It was a beautiful day at Stonetree (much better than the 113 degree day the last time). However, we were all disappointed with our results. It was fun nonetheless. We had to negotiate the marathon runners on the Golden Gate bridge on the way – I got tired just watching them.

    Ben’s Birthday Poker

On Saturday, July 30th, the gang met for Korean food in San Carlos to celebrate Ben’s birthday. Afterwards, we headed over to Dora and Ben’s for a little friendly poker. After last time, we all knew not to trust Allison and her “i’m a beginner” bit. Ky and Dora ended up battling for 1st and 2nd, and in the end (as always), the house was the winner. Happy Birthday, Ben!
