I'm a little behind - sorry.
Grace needed this afternoon to work, so she suggested that Olivia and I go out while Lucas napped. I had a big afternoon planned. Of course she fell right asleep after we gassed up, which was probably good because we encountered the usual traffic on 92 West towards Half Moon Bay. We headed over to the Ritz-Carlton, where they have free public access to the beach. Olivia was a trouper on our short hike down there (after I convinced her that the last several hundred yards was all downhill).
After her last encounter with the ocean (which she brought up today), I brought plenty of extra clothes, but no sand toys. She improvised and we had a great time.
When we were done, guess who had to carry her up that hill? After the trek back, we both needed some refreshments, so we ordered up a Shirley Temple, and iced tea, and some profiteroles with chocolate sauce.
When we got to the car, she was kind enough to inform me that she had to go potty (after I had just strongly suggested she go before we left). We made a quick stop at the grocery store for Grace. When we got home, Grace and Lucas had a delicious Tuscan Lemon Chicken and rice waiting for us.
Did I mention the weather here in northern California was unbelievable this weekend? Amazing day.
Today was Olivia's first day of pre-school, which is just a few blocks from our house. We all went to go drop her off for her first day. She went around and tried many new things there. Her friend, Kate, is in her class on some days, which will be nice for her.
Although it was hard for all of us to say good-bye, Olivia did great and jumped back into the mix. I think she's going to love going to school.
Despite pleading for no gifts, everyone pretty much ignored us and got Olivia something lovely for her birthday. She was so excited by her wonderful presents, I think she forgot that Christmas had just passed. Thanks to everyone for their thoughtfulness.
After breaking the seal on Wii bowling and attending the Sugar holiday party, Olivia has been into bowling lately. Therefore, we decided to have an impromptu bowling party for Olivia today for her birthday. Frances brought Jake, Lily and Jude. Christine and Joon brought Marisa and Sarah, who loved attending to Olivia and Lucas. Paul brought Micah (Janet was home with Kiri, who was sick - we're sad we didn't get to meet her this trip). Il brought Rylee and Harrison. Christine brought Annalou's son, Aiden. Fritz brought himself.
The birthday girl had the most fun, so we were pleased. Her dad managed a turkey (sup) and had a super-fun time, too.
Happy Birthday, Olivia!

On Sunday, October 11th, Kate and her fiancé, Ben, took the kids to the Oakland Zoo. It looks like Olivia & Lucas had a great time. Thanks for taking so many great pictures!

We've been wondering what to do about Olivia's hair for quite some time. We were attached to her baby hair when she was younger, which seems to have disappeared. Unfortunately, it wasn't replaced with much, which does not compute b/c both me and Grace have a lot of hair (knock on wood). On Saturday, we finally took her to get her hair cut. Coincidentally, we ran into Ben and Mason, who was also getting a trim. Handsome guy he is.
I also took a video of the whole thing and didn't take the time to edit it down, so it's 7 mins start to finish if you're interested.
Sorry no short version. Entire haircut in 7 mins.
Kate invited us to her birthday party today, which was at Frontierland Park in Pacifica. The park was nestled in the hills above Pacifica and had a pretty amazing playground, complete with water misters. It was a beautiful day and the sun was out for most of the time. Most importantly, we were able to meet Kate's family and friends. We had met Ben, her fiancé, on a couple of occasions, and Olivia and Lucas had met her parents, but this was the first time Grace and I were able to meet her parents and sisters. Both of the kids were super excited to see Kate on a Saturday. Thanks for having us!
Okay, Olivia wasn't really in the nytimes, but this is the first banner ad in which I've seen her. Exciting! Thanks to Arthur for pointing out it existed and to Jamie for seeing it on nytimes.com and sending me the screen shot. I haven't seen it myself yet.
